Nintendo Switch 2 reveal rumor reignites hopes for NG Switch announcement in 2023

A fairly harmless X post by reporter Jez Corden has sparked a huge amount of speculation in regard to the Nintendo Switch 2. Corden originally posted the statement “Heard some rumors recently that Nintendo showed off the new Switch behind closed doors to select press @ Gamescom. Full reveal/leaks may be relatively imminent”. The OP later edited the post to add in a few additional disclaimers (compare below).

There had already been some pre-existing rumors that Nintendo might show off the Switch 2/NG Switch at Gamescom, although it could be argued that it would more likely be shared with trusted game developers in the region rather than with excited journalists. While other noted Nintendo commenters, such as NateTheHate, have simply stated that the press were not privy to any sighting of the Nintendo Switch 2, there have been some implications made that someone saw a next-generation console.

In addition, the pretty reliable source that is Insider Gaming (Tom Henderson) has also stated that their sources have heard similar rumors to those posted by Corden. If Nintendo has been revealing the Switch 2 to a select few at Gamescom then it seems reasonable to suggest that an announcement in 2023 could still be on the cards. For instance, there is the Tokyo Game Show starting on September 21, which would be the ideal place for Nintendo to share some tidbits to devs about its Switch successor.

With the OG Nintendo Switch having been officially announced in October 2016 before being fully released on March 3 2017, there are still some hopes that a similar schedule could be in place in regard to the Switch 2 release date. However, multiple recent reports have said that a Nintendo Switch successor is most likely headed for a release in the second half of 2024, and with rumors of a new OLED Model in the pipeline, it appears Nintendo might still be planning to squeeze as many Switch sales out as possible before unleashing whatever is coming next.
